Consumer Electronics - Japanese Car Navigation Market Up Again in April 2005

According to statistics by JEITA, shipment volume of car navigation systems in Japan amounted to 308,000 units in April 2005, an increase of 5.0% in comparison with the same period two years ago.

Other car offerings showed mixed results. Shipment volume of Car AVC (Automatic Volume Control) had a value of 54.5 billion Yen (US$510.6 million; US$1=106.7 Yen), which meant a growth of 3.5% in comparison with the same period two years ago. Car radio, car MD (Mini Disc), and car stereos all experienced decline, whereas Car CD players saw a 4.2% growth.

Matsushita Panasonic Automotive Systems will introduce a car navigation system with an external digital turner in June 2005, which will be able to offer stable picture quality. It also supports AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), which can broadcast 5.1ch high-quality sound for terrestrial digital transmission.
